Our Promise to the Environment

Environmental responsibility is built into our processes. The drive for continuous improvement shows in our efforts to use more environmentally friendly raw materials, to engage more in the circular economy, and to use energy efficiently.

Environmental thinking as a part of the corporate culture

The environment is the most important aspect of sustainability for us. Operating in the chemical industry, we understand impacts, reactions, and cause-and-effect relationships. As part of the manufacturing industry, we also recognize our role and responsibility in the chain of sustainable practices, raw materials, packaging, and energy solutions.

While we continue to develop our existing operations to be more environmentally sustainable, we also boldly venture onto new paths. What could regenerative business mean for an operator like us? What needs to happen for closed-loop packaging to become an everyday reality? And above all, how can we help our customers succeed in their own environmental goals?

Our Promise to the Environment brings together the different functions of our organisation to research, develop, and succeed in this work together with our customers. We believe that the best success stories, also in sustainability, are born from collaboration.

Our Promise to the Environment: Three sectors that cover all our operations

Climate change

We commit to the Science Based Targets, including limiting global warming to +1,5  °C, and the Net Zero 2050 target.

Mid-term targets (2021-2031)

  • By 2031, we will only use renewable energy as our primary sources* of energy
  • By 2031, we will decrease our scope 3 CO2e emission intensity by 21%

Long term target (2031-2050)

  • By 2050, we will decrease our total CO2e emission intensity by 90%

We have aligned our climate targets with the Science Based Targets initiative.  This means, that we aim for a minimum of 90% actual reductions in scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions. We are committed to reduce our total CO2e emissions through both mid and long term actions.

With primary sources of energy we mean the energy, that is used for our production processes, heating of buildings and other activities, that consume the majority of used energy on a daily basis.

Non-systematically or rarely used and minor auxiliary processes or devices can utilize fossil fuel, if it is justified with the contingency of our operations or sociaetal security of supply. These exceptions can be e.g. backup generators or individual on-site transportation machines.

Relevant scope 3 categories for Kiilto:

Upstream

  • Purchased goods and services
  • Fuel and energy related activities
  • Waste generated in operations
  • Upstream transportation and distribution
  • Business travelling
  • Employee commuting

Downstream

  • Downstream transportation and distribution
  • Use of sold products
  • End-of-life treatment of sold products
  • Investments

SDG 7 is ”Affordable and clean energy”. We are committing to SDG 7 by substantially increasing our share of renewable energy.

SDG 13 is “Climate action”, and we are committing to it by improving education and awareness-raising on climate change mitigation, adaptation and impact reduction.

Examples of our efforts

Environmental impact of products and solutions

We reduce materials with significant environmental impact, in alignment with customer expectations.

Targets

  • We increase the share of sustainable product sales annually in Constructions and  in Industrial Adhesives and Fireproofing
  • We increase the share of renewable raw materials annually in Professional hygiene and Consumer Goods.
  • We decrease the amount of packaging material used in Professional hygiene and Consumer  Goods products per produced tonne annually.

At Kiilto, the environmental impact of products covers raw materials, packaging, pollution, waste and providing the environmental product information to our customers.

To reduce the significant environmental impact, we focus on the most impactful measures that are based on data and the double materiality assessment.

The sustainable products sales in our Construction and Industrial Adhesives and Fireproofing business areas is met, if the product´s CO2/kg or CO2/kg/m2 emission rate is  more than 10% lower that that of a reference products, or the product promotes renewable content (Mass balance qualifies) having more than 20% biobased or more than 5% circular content.

To minimise the burder to the environment, we offer training on the correct use of product for thousands of professionals each year.

80% of our raw materials are sourced locally, which we have defined as European origin.

10% of Kiiltonians work in RDI dedicating their time to developing the material use, product features, research and innovations to meet both customer requirements and economical feasibility as well as our own environmental targets. The work is done in close collaboration with Kiilto’s purchasing, customers, research institutions and the industry.

SDG 9 is “Industry innovations and infrastructure”. We are committing to SDG 9 by engaging in innovations, scientific research and development.

SDG 12 is ”Responsible consumption and production”. We are committing to SDG 12 by substantially reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse of materials.

Examples of our efforts

Circular economy and regenerative business

We invest in circular economy solutions and promote nature positive business.

Targets

  • We spark cultural shift towards regeneration and inspire partners to join.
  • We create and participate ecosystems that enable circularity and the use of materials that rebuild and enrich the planet.
  • We actively participate to initiatives towards nature positive thinking.

We recognize that true change requires transforming how we work and think, both internally but also in the industry and society. We are dedicated to sparking a cultural shift within Kiilto — embedding regeneration into our mindset, processes, and decision-making — and inspiring our partners to join us on this journey.

Nature Positive is a global societal goal defined as halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 on a 2020 base year and achieve full recovery by 2050. To put this more simply, it means ensuring more nature in the world in 2030 than in 2020 and continued recovery after that.

Our target is that our raw materials will be chosen based on their ability to support biodiversity, improve soil health, and protect water quality. We will that actively contribute to the health of the environment. prioritize regenerative sources

This work links strongly to our opportunity to look beyond our current business and ways of working. We strive to investigate, find and test new ways to accelerate circularity and business that works in balance with the environment.

SDG 12 is ”Responsible consumption and production”. We are committing to SDG 12 by substantially reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse of materials.

SDG 13 is “Climate action”, and we are committing to it by improving education and awareness-raising on climate change mitigation, adaptation and impact reduction.
