Kiilto has switched to using low-emission fuels in its domestic sales deliveries during spring 2025. This means significant reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Almost all of Kiilto’s domestic customer deliveries in Finland and Sweden have been switched to a lower-emission alternative. This is based on deliveries using HVO diesel made from renewable raw materials or waste, other renewable fuels, or fossil-free electricity, depending on the partner.
“The service will earmark a share of the service provider’s fossil-free transport for Kiilto. The approach is based on a model in which Kiilto buys fossil-free transport and the freight service ensures that the corresponding amount of fossil-free transport is realised as part of the total amount of transport”, says Vilma-Lotta Moisio, Kiilto’s head of Purchasing and Logistics.
“The operating model is very similar to that of the electricity market, for example.”
Helping customers meet emissions targets
Emissions reductions are monitored through regular reports that Kiilto receives from its logistics partners. The service reduces the carbon footprint of transport by up to 90%, which also reduces the environmental impact of products.
One of Kiilto’s environmental goals is to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in its deliveries by 20% compared to 2021. In addition to improving Kiilto’s own operations, an equally important goal is to help customers meet their emissions targets.
“We are part of our customers’ value chain, which means the emissions reductions from our operations also directly help our customers to meet their own emissions targets. The reports also help us to provide accurate information on the impact of deliveries on emissions”, Moisio concludes.
Annika Valenius, logistics manager at Kiilto, has also noticed the market’s tightening climate targets.
“Our customers are environmentally conscious and interested in our choices”, Valenius says.
“One of our goals is to help our customers reduce their environmental footprint every year. The goals are part of Kiilto’s Promise to the Environment.”
Emissions reductions above targets
Reducing emissions became an important theme when Kiilto put its domestic freight deliveries out to tender in late 2024.
“Already in the first half of 2025, greenhouse gas emissions from freight deliveries from our Raisio warehouse in Finland have been reduced by 90%, exceeding our targets”, says Tuomas Vuorilehto, transport manager for Kiilto’s professional hygiene business.
There are similar results for domestic deliveries within Sweden, where Kiilto has started collaborating with the freight carrier Schenker, using their insetting model to invest in renewable fuels.
“Through this investment, we expect to reduce our carbon emissions from transportation from our Ängelholm warehouse by a full 88% compared to conventional fossil-based alternatives. During the month of March 2025 alone, we already prevented emissions equivalent to over 7,5 tons of carbon dioxide compared to conventional transportation – equal to 120 flights from Stockholm to Malmö”, says Sebastian Lager, Supply Chain Manager for Kiilto’s professional hygiene business in Sweden.
In total, Kiilto’s Finnish and Swedish sites send out more than 37,000 deliveries every year. This means it’s not just a small change. The amount does not include so-called bulk deliveries, which are not affected by the change. Bulk deliveries refer to products that are not packaged separately but are delivered in tanks or containers, for example.
“This change is our investment in the future. There will be no increase in freight costs for our customers”, Vuorilehto adds.
