Hygienic textile washing in health care

Hygienically washed textiles are essential in healthcare, where proper disinfection, the right products, and careful handling help prevent infections and keep both patients and staff safe.

Clean textiles play a crucial role, especially in healthcare environments, where hygiene levels directly impact the safety of both patients and staff.

Machine washing alone is not always sufficient — particularly in situations involving viral infections, where special disinfectants and performance boosters are required. Using the correct detergent ensures that textiles remain safe and hygienic to use.

How to wash textiles hygienically

To ensure sufficient hygiene levels in healthcare settings, use Kiilto Pro Erisan Oxy+ disinfectant. In other application areas, use Kiilto Pro Oxy Wash washing booster. In both cases, only half the recommended amount of regular detergent should be used.

Thanks to the unique formulation of Erisan Oxy+ disinfectant, its effect activates even at low temperatures, ensuring hygienic textiles at 40–60 °C in standard-length washing programs.

Without a booster, achieving the necessary hygiene level requires washing textiles at 70 °C for the duration of minimum 10 minutes. If the textiles can withstand it, they can also be washed at 90 °C. High temperatures ensure textiles are safe to use and meet strict hygiene standards. Suitable detergents for hygienic washing include Kiilto Pro Textile Liquid, Kiilto Pro Textile Wash, and Kiilto Pro White Textile.

Before washing the textiles

Similar textiles should be washed together, and microfibre textiles should always be washed as a separate load. Follow the machine’s loading instructions.

When handling soiled textiles, use disposable protective gloves and, to avoid viral infections, a respirator. Remove the gloves correctly and maintain good hand hygiene in your work by washing your hands carefully with warm water and soap. Dry your hands thoroughly after washing and remember to use hand lotion.

After washing the textiles

Before taking clean textiles from the machine, disinfect the door and seals using Kiilto Pro Easydes.

Always handle clean textiles with clean, disposable protective gloves.

If separate areas for handling clean and soiled textiles are not available, ensure that surfaces are regularly disinfected after handling both types. This helps prevent the spread of contaminants to already washed textiles.

Maintenance of the washing machine

In healthcare environments, regular washing machine maintenance is crucial to ensure hygienic workwear and patient-related textiles. Cleaning seals, filters, detergent drawers, and using hygiene wash programmes when required helps prevent contamination and supports infection control standards.
