While fire is a crucial element of our daily lives, it also has devastating power. However, the use of flame retardants can help to protect people and property against it. A flame retardant is a chemical that prevents or slows down the progress of fire in the material to which the substance is applied. Kiilto's environmentally friendly flame retardants are efficient and safe to use.
Kiilto manufactures environmentally and user friendly flame retardants for wood, paper and packaging products, as well as insulation and filter materials.
The focus in Kiilto Fireproof products is on their easy, safe use and securing the efficiency of the customer's production process. Kiilto develops its products together with the customer, based on the customer's specific needs. With nearly a hundred years of experience in the chemical industry under our belt and a specialised fireproofing team in our ranks, you are sure to receive the best possible fireproofing solution for your product.
Products made of paper or cardboard are used in numerous fields and in increasingly innovative ways. The possibilities of utilising paper or cardboard are practically endless. For example, corrugated cardboard made of several paper layers is tough enough for the needs of heavy industry, yet at the same time is light and cost-efficient enough to beat many rivalling transport material solutions.
But we must remember that untreated paper and cardboard are flammable materials. This can be the source of issues in many fields of application, such as for construction materials or freight transport boxes. By treating paper or cardboard with flame retardants, you can considerably improve the fire properties of the desired material.
Applying even a small amount of the Kiilto Fireproof flame retardant already significantly improves the fireproofing properties of your product. Our flame retardant is environmentally friendly and has no effect on the product's appearance or its other properties.
Wood still remains a popular choice in the construction industry, as it is a highly multi-purpose construction material and suits a variety of purposes. Wood has excellent properties: it is energy-efficient, durable, renewable, easy to process and aesthetically pleasant. Yet untreated wood is flammable, which makes it less attractive for many applications, even for the above-mentioned construction materials.
You can however turn wood into a more competitive and attractive product for many sectors by improving its fireproofing. The fire properties and fire classification of wood can be enhanced by treating it with Kiilto Fireproof flame retardants, which are environmentally friendly and do not impair other properties of wood or affect its appearance.
Amendments to the Finnish Construction Code Classification (E1) that entered into force at the beginning of 2018 place new challenges on insulation materials. Moreover, stricter regulations for fire protection and thermal insulatability have placed restrictions on existing solutions.
The good news is that existing filter and insulation solutions can be updated using Kiilto Fireproof F-series products in order to comply with the latest requirements.
Three product development managers and two laboratory assistants fill the ranks of the fireproofing team at our large product development unit in Lempäälä. Our laboratory has optimal testing facilities, while long-term cooperation with our partners allows us to promptly carry out specialised procedures, such as cone calorimeter tests with the university, or SBI corner tests with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Armed with these tools and aids, we are always ready and able to adapt our tests and methods to meet our customers’ needs.
The efficiency of flame retardants often stems from the use of substances harmful to people and the environment, such as bromine. The toxicity of these substances, their accumulation in the body and the resulting health hazards has changed the general attitude towards fireproofing. The demand for proactively protecting fireproofing substances which are not harmful to the environment or people has increased over the past few years. Along with increased awareness, legislation is also following suit with changes to accommodate more environmentally friendly flame retardants. For nearly a hundred years, responsibility has been a key foundation of Kiilto's business. Like with any other product manufactured in the chemical industry, the primary components of Kiilto's responsibility include the development of products which are safe to the environment and to users, the promotion of social well-being and finally, the creation of a profitable business.
