Materials
Kiilto Kerafiber is a ready-mixed, fibre-reinforced waterproofing membrane for use in floors and walls in bathrooms, saunas and similar wet areas prior to tiling. Not suitable for applications that are constantly under water (e.g., pools) or exposed to temperatures above +70 °C (e.g., sauna steam room walls).
The substrate must be dry, absorbent, free from dust and even. All materials that might impair adhesion of the waterproofing membrane must be removed. Weak and flexible constructions must be braced before starting the job. Ensure that the construction and substrate are suitable for waterproofing and tiling. Underfloor heating is laid under the waterproofing membrane. Kiilto Kerafiber's compatibility with the most commonly used floor drains is tested and approved. Ensure floor drain's compatibility by consulting our technical service or the floor drain supplier.

Walls:
If needed, sand and/or smooth uneven substrates with Kiilto wall plaster suitable for use under waterproofing and tiling. Prime dry wall surface before waterproofing with Kiilto Keraprimer or Kiilto PrimerOne as per instructions. The primer must be dry before starting the waterproofing work.
Stir Kerafiber before use. Apply Kiilto Kerafiber on walls in vertical corners, construction board and other substrate material joints and junctures. Press Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha tape to fresh waterproofing membrane and ensure that it is thoroughly wetted. With pipe inlets, cut an approx. 10 x 10 cm reinforcement piece and cut a hole in the middle, approx. 4 mm smaller than the pipe's outside diameter. Clean, roughen with sandpaper and prime the inlets. Press the inlet reinforcement piece to the fresh waterproofing membrane and ensure that it is thoroughly wetted. You can also use pre-fabricated inlet reinforcements. It is also possible to seal up inlets as well as vertical and horizontal joints with Kiilto XPU adhesive sealant before applying Kiilto Kerafiber. Apply Kerafiber on the entire area to be waterproofed with a roller and allow to dry (colour change). Apply a second coat of Kerafiber and let dry. Let the first coat dry for approx. two hours. Let the second coat dry for approx. six hours. Drying time depends on layer thickness and prevailing conditions. Check that the membrane layer is consistent. Seal any thin/porous spots and allow to dry thoroughly. The dry membrane layer must be 0.4 mm at the minimum. Fix wall tiles with a compatible Kiilto cementitious adhesive. After the cementitious adhesive has dried, grout the tiles with Kiilto tile grout and use Kiilto silicone for sealing vertical wall corners and inlets.
Floors:
If needed, sand and/or smooth uneven substrates with Kiilto floor levelling compound. Prime dry floor surface before waterproofing with Kiilto Keraprimer or Kiilto PrimerOne as per instructions. The primer must be dry before starting the waterproofing work.
Stir Kerafiber before use. Apply Kiilto Kerafiber in horizontal corners and pipe inlets and press Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha tape onto the fresh waterproofing membrane and ensure that it is thoroughly wetted. For inside and outside corners you can also use pre-fabricated corner pieces. Clean, roughen with sandpaper and prime the inlets. Inlets on the floor as well as the floor/wall junction can be sealed also with Kiilto XPU fix before application of Kiilto Kerafiber. For floor drains you can use self-adherent Kiilto Kaivolaippa or Kiilto Lattiakaivovahvike reinforcements.
Apply Kerafiber on the entire area to be waterproofed and let the first coat dry (colour change). Apply a second coat of Kerafiber on the entire area to be waterproofed and let dry (colour change). Let the first coat dry for approx. 2 h. Let the second coat dry for approx. 6 h. Drying time depends on layer thickness and prevailing conditions. Check that the membrane layer is consistent. Seal any thin/porous spots with waterproofing membrane and allow them to dry properly. The thickness of the waterproofing membrane layer on the floor drain area must be 1.2 mm at the minimum, elsewhere on the floor 0.5 mm. Before tiling, cut open a hole for the floor drain, approx. 60 mm smaller than the drain's diameter. Finish with a compatible clamp ring. Fix floor tiles with a compatible Kiilto cementitious adhesive. Allow to dry properly and grout the tiles with Kiilto tile grout. Seal vertical and horizontal corners as well as inlets with Kiilto silicone.
