Fireproofing becomes part of Kiilto’s services

Kiilto is launching its new Fireproof product family of fire protection solutions for paper and packaging industry. The launch takes place at the PacTec Helsinki fair in May. The key features of Kiilto Fireproof flame retardants are eco-friendliness, ease of use and effectiveness.

Demand for environmentally friendly flame retardants is growing strongly. To meet this demand, Kiilto has assembled a top-level R&D team to create effective and safe solutions. Kiilto has developed flame retardants in cooperation with university researchers since 2015.

“There is now a wider variety of ways to use different materials, and recent innovations in the manufacture of flame retardants have also made new applications possible. And safety considerations now get more attention, in all sectors. Interest in our fire protection solutions is very strong, both in Finland and further afield”, says Atte Borgenström, business development manager for Kiilto’s flame retardant business segment.

Kiilto currently focuses on the use of flame retardants in the wood, paper and packaging industries, and for insulation and filter materials. “Flame retardants are really a natural extension for these segments, since Kiilto also offers all of them expertise in adhesives as well”, Borgenström explains.

In recent years, the environmental impact of flame retardants has come under scrutiny. The effectiveness of many of the flame retardants on the market is based on chemical compounds containing bromine, which is harmful to humans and the environment. Although not all the health hazards of bromine have been identified, many brominated flame retardants are known to be toxic. Bromine becomes enriched in the food chain, ultimately ending up in humans. The toxins contained in flame retardants can also end up being inhaled by humans, for example, from building insulation or home electrical appliances. Despite these problems, however, bromine has typically been used in flame retardants up until now, because of a lack of viable alternatives. That is no longer the case.

According to Borgenström, his R&D team works to ensure continuous product development and attentiveness to each customer’s specific needs. “We want to offer our customers the best possible fire retardant solution. That’s what matters most”.
